A small guide to sauna etiquette

The Claudius Therme is a place for rest, recuperation and enjoyment. So that everyone feels completely at ease here, the following guidelines have been proven to be useful:

Reserving loungers is not allowed

Our guests are supposed to be able to rest between their bathing and sauna sessions. If, therefore,  you are not currently using a lounger, we request that you remove any personal items from it and not to ‘reserve’ it for yourself. Otherwise our sauna staff will clear any reserved loungers themselves. There are many spacious storage compartments in which you can store your bags and towels.

Aufgüsse

In the Claudius Therme, you can enjoy quiet and relaxing “Aufgüsse” (when hot water is poured onto the rocks in a sauna) every hour. Please refer to the current Aufguss schedule hanging in the sauna area. We request that you go to the sauna with the Aufguss you want in good time in order to avoid interruptions. We regret that you are not allowed to enter a sauna after an Aufguss has started.

Privacy

We would like to offer all guests the chance to find a place of undisturbed peace and tranquillity in each area at any time. We therefore ask you to keep any displays of affection throughout the entire facility to a minimum and to refrain from them completely in the sauna cabins and in the pools.

Swimwear

Wearing swimwear is compulsory in thermal area or bathing area, but is not allowed in the sauna area and especially not in the saunas themselves. Outside the saunas and in the whole facility, you are required to wear a bathrobe or a towel. The floatation pool can also be used with or without swimwear.

A bathrobe must be worn in all areas of the restaurant.

Eating and drinking

Food and drinks are available at the sauna bar, in the restaurant in the bathing area or in the Rose Café in the Rose Terraces. You are not allowed to consume any food or drink you have brought with you in the pool and sauna area.

Undisturbed peace

Our facility is a place of peace and relaxation for you and the other guests. We therefore ask you to help to keep it this way and act accordingly. Out of consideration for the other guests, we ask that you do not use mobile phones and cameras while on the premises. Smoking is permitted only in the designated smoking areas. Pipes and cigars are not allowed.

Healthy saunas

A visit to sauna stimulates the metabolism, detoxifies the body, supplies the skin with blood and purifies it, boosts the immune system and relaxes both muscles and soul. So that a sauna is well tolerated and beneficial, here are some tips for your stay.

A healthy visit to a sauna actually consists of four phases. Foot baths, massages and exercise are useful complements.

Healthy saunas

A visit to sauna stimulates the metabolism, detoxifies the body, supplies the skin with blood and purifies it, boosts the immune system and relaxes both muscles and soul. So that a sauna is well tolerated and beneficial, here are some tips for your stay.

Course of events

A healthy visit to a sauna actually consists of four phases.

Showering

Before you enter the sauna area, please take off your swimwear and cover yourself up with a towel or bathrobe. Before you enter the sauna itself, you should take a shower.

Heating phase

The length of your stay should depend on your personal well-being. For inexperienced sauna users, the heating phase in a sauna with a temperature of 80°C should not last longer than 15 minutes. If you like it hot, you should sit near the oven or at a higher level. Temperatures on the middle and lower levels are more moderate. Please do not talk as the sauna is a peaceful place. In the sauna, please use a towel that is big enough for you to sit on and put your feet on.

Cooling off

You should then go and get some fresh air for a few minutes. The refreshment using ice or water that then follows should always start at the feet and work its way up towards the heart. If you do not suffer from high blood pressure or any heart problems, the plunge pool is the ideal way to refresh yourself after showering.

Resting phase

The resting phase is when the beneficial effect of the sauna becomes evident. You should allow yourself as much time to rest as you had previously spent in the heat. Please behave in such a way so as not to disturb the other guests when they are resting.

Foot baths, massages and exercise are useful complements.

General

Since the body loses a lot of water during a stay in the sauna, we advise our guests to drink a lot every time before using a sauna. This will assist the detoxification process. If you feel unwell or suffer from cardiovascular conditions, you should consult your doctor before going to a sauna. Our staff are available to answer any questions and listen to any suggestions you may have at any time. We wish you lots of pleasure and a relaxing stay at the Claudius Therme.
